We are in the midst of the election and we are seeing the votes come in for former Vice President Joe Biden and President Donald Trump.

A lot has happened for the nation to get to this point, we’ve seen 20+ democrats run to be the nominee, and as the numbers dwindled Joe Biden became the face of the democratic party for the 2020 Presidential Election.

I want to talk about why and how. Why do people like Joe Biden and why would people vote for him? And, why do people like Donald Trump and why would people vote for him?

First, let's talk about Joe Biden. He was the Vice President under Obama who was the first black president and his current running mate, Kamala Harris, could become the first black woman Vice President.

In the beginning of Biden getting the spotlight to himself, when all the other candidates dropped out, the notion or initial idea at the time from what I had seen was disappointment. Many people, at least online, seemed to lean towards Bernie Sanders. They had wanted Sanders to win the nomination, though as history will live to tell, he didn't. The stances of Medicare for All, tuition-free college, and a $15 minimum wage were becoming and still are, mainstream.

Although people were reluctant of Biden, the other side to that was: “well at least he's not Trump”. People would still vote for him because he was going to be a better choice than Donald Trump. People rallied around that idea online and in person, giving him support. The slogan “Gen Z for Biden” was and has been also becoming mainstream.

In the debates, Biden was able to throw the hardest punches where it hurt the most, COVID-19. Some supporters of Trump, or at the very least people who voted for him in 2016, were now also leaning towards Biden. And unlike in the 2016 election where many people DIDNT vote because of the notion that they did not want to be forced to choose the lesser of 2 evils (giving attention to Jill Stein), that idea it seems has been thrown out the window as so many people have come in to vote and express themselves at the polling stations.

This is exactly what fuels Joe Biden and gives air to his person. Joe Biden is an outlet for everything that has happened since Donald Trump announced his candidacy and cameras could not stop shooting his way.

The power in this is that he must now become a beacon to direct this attention towards the election. We’ll see how well that worked out when we see the election results.

Now let's analyze Donald Trump. Our president is full of controversy and attention. Ever since he announced his candidacy the media could not get enough. He was a far fetched candidate and no one thought he would win. And yet, so many people clung to him and supported him when the majority wanted to dismiss him. There was something about him that left a ringing in your ear. Whether you liked him or not, everybody seemed to have an opinion on Donald J. Trump.

He is entertaining, he is not a politician, he speaks his mind, and he is a republican. This is why people liked him and voted for him and continue to like him.

As a result of being entertaining, he catches people's attention. He is not and has never been “boring”. John F. Kennedy proved that having an eye for the camera could also play into becoming President.

“He’s not a politician”. Trump is a businessman, whatever the specifics may be, he clearly lives well and has a generous amount of money. To some, this is a positive quality because by his success you can infer that he knows what he's doing. Others would argue his life of wealth disconnects him from working-class Americans. His “businessman” status poses a title of success, knowledge, and power. This has gained him praise.

Though, pushing those 2 things aside. There is something that makes Donald Trump, Donald Trump. It's the reason the media focuses on him at large.

It is because he speaks from his mind unapologetically and unfiltered. His “unconventional” way of speaking about issues as well as some of his proposals like building a wall on the Southern Border have given Donald Trump an edge. Though at times it seems like that edge will tear through his administration.

This is what people play off of Donald Trump. Whether they're taking it out of context or its construed to make you believe something else by the media, his words will always define his character and be the film by which people see his actions.

If Donald Trump did not speak the way he did. He would probably not be in such a hard place now. But if you remove that aspect about him, what is really left? Would he have won the nomination and race in 2016? Will he win the race now?

What is left is a republican. And that is a large part as to why people have voted for him regardless of his “rhetoric” or the way he talks to or about others. The stances he has that are renowned republican views are what keeps voters on him.

In contrast, there are those who agree with his rhetoric and are fueled by it. Even though he may denounce some people or groups, his words continue to be the gas poured onto those flames. And that is what people are taking jabs at. That is what pushes some republicans away.

Donald Trump is a man of many characteristics. The results of the election will tell us where Americans align theirs with his.
